Abstract

Dental Caries is considered a public health problem worldwide, affecting not only children, but also teenagers and adults. For the disease development, microorganisms must adhere to the tooth surface and form biofilms. Our research group has been studying natural products from plants for the chemical control of oral biofilms. To overcome some limitations of these natural products, a mucoahesive system for controlled release has been developed. The results showed that this system controls biofilms cariogenic factors. However, this system needs to be optimized to improve its applicability in clinical practice. Thus, the present project aims to develop, synthesize and characterize in vitro mucoadhesive multiparticulate system for controlled release of natural substances and to evaluate their anti-caries, antimicrobial, antibiofilm and cytotoxicity activity. The systems will be obtained from natural polymers using two preparation techniques. Further, a flavonoid or a terpene will be added to the systems. A polymicrobial inoculum obtained from saliva of a previously selected volunteer will be used.Sscreening of the antimicrobial and antibiofilm systems activity will be performed. The systems with the best results will be analyzed for their ability to interfere with polymicrobial biofilm maturation, enamel demineralization and cytotoxicity. The systems will also be characterized by in vitro release mechanisms, mucoadhesiveness and surface morphology of the systems. (AU)
