Abstract

This research aims to evaluate the dose-response effect of xylitol, associated or not to fluoride (F), in reducing the demineralization of enamel in vitro. For such, 120 bovine enamel specimens will be prepared (4 mm x 4 mm x 3 mm), polished, and selected by surface hardness (initial SH). The specimens will be submitted to a pH cycling model for 7 days. The experimental groups to be evaluated are solutions: without xylitol and F (negative control), 5% xylitol, 10% xylitol, 20% xylitol, 500 ppm NaF (227 ppm F), 5% xylitol + F, 10% xylitol + F or 20% xylitol + F. After the treatments and pH cycles, surface hardness will be measured again (final SH). Afterward, the specimens will be sectioned and prepared for transverse microradiography (TMR). Data will be evaluated for normality (Kolmogorov-Smirnov test) and homogeneity (Bartlett test) to select the appropriate statistical test to be used. The significance level adopted will be 5%. (AU)
