Abstract

Resistance is an idea commonly used by social movement organizers to create and manage collective actions. However, it plays distinct roles in distinct mobilization and action strategies. This research will comparatively investigate the Brazilian Sanitary Reform and the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT-UP) New York to increase our understanding of the militante and ativista strategies, respectively. The internship at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York is a crucial stage for the analysis of meanings and functions played by resistance in social movements in Brazil and the United States. The goal of the internship is threefold: a) data collecting; b) methodological training c) institutional networking. During the time abroad, the applicant will access the ACT-UP New York archives held by the New York Public Library, the New York University, and the City of New York Museum. He will also be able to attend ACT-UP regular meetings and interact with current members. The Digital Humanities (DH) is an interdisciplinary field concerned with computational tools in the social sciences. CUNY DH Program offers its students the necessary computational skills to navigate big data bases while teaching investigators to think critically about digital platforms. The applicant will audit courses in DH while at CUNY. In previous research sponsored by the FAPESP, the candidate brought together insights from cultural sociology, social movement studies, and human development to explore protestors' agency. He did this based on Professors Jasper and Stetsenko's works. These academics are based at CUNY, have supported the applicant's research career over the last years, and will sponsor him for 12 months in a joint appointment at the Sociology Department and the Urban Education Program. Finally, the internship will consolidate ongoing partnerships between PUC/SP and the City University of New York. (AU)
