Abstract

Cancer has been reported as the leading cause of death in dogs, surpassing infectious diseases. In bitches, mammary tumors are the most common, accounting for about 50% of cases. Canine mammary carcinoma is the one that occurs most frequently, out of a total of 100,000 animals, it affects about 182 bitches annually. The main immunohistochemical prognostic markers evaluated in canine mammary tumors are estrogen (ER) and progesterone (RP) hormone receptors, COX-2, CD31, cell proliferation marker Ki67, epidermal growth factor (EGF), HER2 and TP53. The value of HER2 expression in canine mammary tumors is not fully elucidated, due to the variety of results in the literature. In addition, there are few studies about the use of RE and PR as prognostic factors in mammary tumors in dogs. Studies that better elucidate tumor pathogenesis and aim to improve cancer treatment and prevention are necessary to improve the quality of treatments. The objectives of this Research Internship Abroad Project (BEPE-MS) are: to histologically classify mammary tumors and to evaluate the expression of the biomarkers RE, RP, Ki67 and HER2 in canine mammary carcinomas, in order to complement and compare it with the infiltrates of cytotoxic and regulatory T cells.
