Abstract

This research project, by characterizing the theatrical repertoires in Buenos Aires between 1783 (the building of the first coliseum) and 1826 (ending point of interest for the main project), seeks to understand the composition of theatrical repertoires in the region, analyzing sources such as: a) theatrical librettos of original and translated works; b) manuscript plays, especially those of Luis Ambrosio Morante; c) miscellaneous documents about the temporary coliseum's activities; d) Buenos Aires' press-published texts; e) first printed edition of this corpus' plays, highlighting the prologues, notes and textual variations in relation to following editions. The referred documents can be found in Argentina's National Library (especially the volumes entitled "Teatro Americano" from División Tesoro Libros), in the Archivo General de la Nación and in the files of the Instituto Nacional de Estudos Teatrales. This research offers data to comprehend the region's dynamics as to the circulation of theatrical texts, its stage adaptations - considering the specific interests of each company - and its reception by the creole intellectuals, mapping the debates about theater in the press.
