Abstract

This project aims to analyze in detail the novel Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship [Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre], published by Goethe between 1795 and 1796, under the philosophical point of view, using as a critical investigative basis the exchange of correspondence between its author and Friedrich Schiller, with special attention to the letters exchanged between 1794 and 1796, which present, in speculative language, certain meanings of the novel. Schiller and Goethe's letters, in addition to providing a preview of the philosophical atmosphere of their time, namely kantism and the rising idealism, constitute an important document for the interpretation and writing of the novel in question, whose critical analysis, when applied to the found in the narrative course of the work, can significantly contribute to the understanding of its internal movements. In this way, we will seek to present the novel's aesthetics direction, that is, its philosophical sense from the aesthetics path, which will serve not only as an interpretive study of the work, but also as part of the correspondence between Goethe and Schiller, thus illuminating the main analyzes and criticisms of the novel operated by the so-called Goethezeit, such as those of C.G. Körner, W. von Humboldt, Jena's First Romanticism and Hegel, and for contemporary critical fortunes, such as those of György Lukács and Franco Moretti. (AU)
