Abstract

Breast cancer (BC) ranks first worldwide in incidence and mortality in women. The number of BC cases in Brazilian women is estimated to increase by almost 50% by 2040. Due to the complexity and epidemiological relevance, there is an urgent need to plan multidisciplinary strategies that aim not only for prevention but also to improve BC outcomes (recurrence, metastasis, and mortality). Previous studies have shown a correlation between omega-3 intake and regulation of the process in tumor initiation and progression. However, evidence on the role of omega-3 in CM is limited. Among the gaps in this field is the paucity of solid evidence about the omega-3-GPR120 interaction, as the effects of this possible interaction at the inflammatory, oxidative, and tumor levels. We propose to evaluate the association between omega-3 incorporated into the erythrocyte membranes and tumor expression of GPR120, as well as its impact on biomarkers of inflammation and oxidation, anatomopathological (TNM), and clinical staging of women with CM. This observational, analytical cross-sectional research project was based on a sample of 295 women newly diagnosed with CM assisted in oncologic treatment reference centers. We collected data on sociodemographic profile, clinical history, anthropometric and body composition, anatomopathological and clinical staging (by TNM system), and immunohistochemistry analysis. In addition, biological materials (blood and tumor tissue) were collected. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences® (SPSS), version 20.0 (SPSS Incorporation, 2010), will be used for all statistical tests. The significance value considered will be p<0.05.
