Abstract

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease, mediated and modulated by the host, caused by the presence of a dysbiotic biofilm in close contact with the gingival tissues. When left untreated, periodontitis leads to the destruction of the supporting tissues of the tooth, which can culminate in the loss of dental elements. The administration of natural compounds as a complementary therapy for periodontal diseases (PDs) has been shown to be favorable over the last few years and studies evaluating the beneficial effects of such compounds in modulating the host's immune response have shown their anti-inflammatory, antiresorptive and anti-resorptive effects. reparative, which can classify such natural compounds as possible adjuvant therapeutic approaches for PDs. Casearia sylvestris Sw. (Salicaceae) is an arboreal or shrubby plant species popularly called guaçatonga, traditionally used as an antiseptic, febrifuge, depurative, topical anesthetic, antiulcer, antirheumatic, antidiarrheal and anti-inflammatory. Several studies have pointed out the beneficial effects of C sylvestris with anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity, effect on the modulation of nitric oxide production and even inhibition of tumor proliferation. In this project, we will investigate the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant pharmacological activities of C. sylvestris extract, in addition to its effect on the progression of alveolar bone loss, on induced periodontitis, and on the repair process of the oral masticatory mucosa, through study models. in vivo, enabling advances in pharmacological studies and being able to contribute to the development and production of a future herbal medicine.
