Abstract

The prevalence of hypertension among African-Americans is the highest in the world and it is increasing. Conversely, effective therapies, control and awareness of hypertension in African-Americans (AA) have declined over the last decade. This putsAA at a 180% higher risk of stroke, 400% higher risk of end stage renal disease and 150% higher rate of death attributable to heart disease. The goal of this research program is to discover complementary exercise interventions that are designed tooptimally target arterial blood pressure, and understanding the mechanisms involved in the control of blood pressure in African Americans.
