Effects of Brazilian Red Propolis during the second intention skin healing process: an in vitro and in vivo approach

Abstract

Wound healing is a complex process involving the participation of different cell types and chemical mediators in the stages of hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling, which overlap to close the lesion and restore functional skin function. For the process of tissue repair, cellular activation is fundamental. Among cellular understanding, mast cells are essential cells that exercise importance from the hemostasis phase, to tissue repair. Thus, this project aims at evaluating: (1) the relationship of skin mast cells in secondary intention lesions in an in vivo model, and (2) the viability and migration of fibroblast in vitro, both under the treatment of Brazilian red propolis. We have chosen two vehicles for these treatments that will be used in intense or low exudation. This project will use secondary intention lesions on the back of rats during 3, 7, and 14 days of post-injury treatment, where the alteration and maturation of mast cells present in the dermis will be analyzed and will be correlated with fibroblast data obtained in our laboratory, doi:10.3390/antiox11112188. Furthermore, using a human fibroblast monolayer in vitro, migration and viability will also be evaluated.
