Effect of time reducing of acid etching and electric current on the long-term bond strength of fiber posts to root dentin

Abstract

Aim: It will be to evaluate the effect of acid etching for 3 s and application of a universal adhesive system under electric current on the durability of the bond strength of fiber posts luted with a resin-based luting system. Material and method: Forty bovine roots (n = 10) with a length of 15 mm will be used, which will have the root canal endodontically treated and prepared (10 mm) for cementation of a conical fiberglass post according to adhesive protocol (etch-and-rinse and self-etch) and application of the adhesive system under electric current (35 µA or without current). For etch-and-rinse protocol, acid etching will be carried out for 3 s using 35% phosphoric acid, followed by the application of a universal adhesive under electric current or not. In the self-etch technique, the adhesive will be applied as described, but without acid etching. Then, an amine-free dual resin cement will be inserted into the root canal with the aid of a needle tip and fiber post, followed by light curing for 40 s using a polywave LED at irradiance of 1,000 mW/cm2. After 24 h, the roots will be subjected to 20,000 thermal cycles (5 and 55ºC), and then sectioned using a metallographic saw to obtain 6 slices of 1 mm thickness (2 slices for each third: cervical, middle and apical). Bond strength will be measured by the push out test using a universal testing machine and the fracture pattern will be evaluated using a stereomicroscope. Method of analyzing results: Data obtained will be tabulated, analyzed, and subjected to the most appropriate statistical tests, adopting a significance level of 5%. Expected results: It is expected that the selective dentin etching and the application of the adhesive system under electric current will provide improved adhesion of fiber posts to the root dentin in the long term.
