Abstract

During childhood, contact with caregivers is essential for children's development, and this care movement is characterized as parenting. The way these relationships unfold is called parenting styles (PSs), which are classified into three groups: authoritarian, authoritative, and permissive. PSs are responsible for shaping various skills in children, including Emotional Intelligence (EI). EI, in turn, is the ability to perceive, understand, and regulate emotions to promote emotional and intellectual growth, which is of great importance for children and can be mediated through parenting styles. In Brazil, there is no research linking these two constructs; therefore, this study aims to compare the emotional intelligence of groups of adult children who perceive themselves to have been raised in each of the types of parenting styles. This will be done by recruiting approximately 200 participants aged between 18 and 35, of both sexes, who are literate and have been raised by a father, mother, or another caregiver over 18 years old. Participants will respond to a socioeconomic characterization questionnaire and two inventories: the Parental Authority Questionnaire (PAQ), which will assess parenting styles through other-report, and the Emotional Competence Inventory (ICE 3.0), which will analyze participants' emotional competencies through self-report. Quantitative data analyses will be conducted using descriptive and inferential statistics, and qualitative data analyses will employ thematic analysis to verify the research objective.
