Abstract

The "SustentaBio" work plan proposes the creation of innovative educational resources targeting high school students, with a focus on environmental education, materials science, and sustainability. In a world facing an increasing generation of solid waste, this project seeks to engage students in understanding the environmental impacts of material consumption and disposal, while encouraging sustainable solutions through an investigative and interdisciplinary approach. The proposal is based on inquiry-based learning and is structured in three main phases. The first phase involves a bibliographic review on the environmental impacts of solid waste and the study of sustainable alternatives such as biodegradable materials. This theoretical foundation will be complemented by practical activities, including mapping the types and quantities of solid waste produced within schools and their communities, thus fostering student engagement with their local environmental context. In the second phase, the acquired knowledge will be applied through experimentation and the development of educational materials. Degradation tests will be carried out on various materials (both conventional and sustainable) under different environmental conditions (soil, water, and compost). Based on the results, eco-friendly educational kits, biological models, and educational games made from recyclable materials will be developed to support active and interdisciplinary learning in science education-integrating biology, chemistry, physics, and environmental education. The third phase involves implementing the developed didactic sequences in both public and private schools. Experimental classes, discussions, and interactive workshops will be conducted with students using the materials produced. To ensure replicability, educational videos, outreach content, and an illustrated report with detailed guidelines will be created, allowing other educators to implement the project in different contexts.More than simply teaching about recycling and sustainability, this project aims to develop critical environmental awareness and social responsibility among students. By combining science, creativity, and action, "SustentaBio" fosters student engagement and meaningful learning connected to real-world environmental challenges. The project also includes dissemination of results through academic events and digital platforms, ensuring public visibility of the initiatives carried out.
