Abstract

In this project we propose the development of analytical methodologies for determination of organochlorine (endosulfan, picloran and 2,4-D) and organophosphorus (parathion, dichlorvos and glyphosate) compounds in natural waters and soil extracts employing electrochemical techniques (square wave voltammetry and amperometry). The sample conditioning required by these techniques will be automated by Sequential Injection Analysis, which will drive the conditioned sample solution toward the electrode surface, enhancing the sampling frequency and minimizing the generation of toxic residues. Studies with boron-dopped film diamonds will be performed aiming to substitute mercury as working electrode in the measurements. These studies will be made in cooperation with the research group Diamante e Materiais Relacionados (DIMARE), which is managed by Professor Neidenêi Gomes Ferreira from the Laboratório Associado de Sensores e Materiais do Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (LAS/INPE). The validation of the methodology will be made according to recommendations of INMETRO.A second step in the present project is the modification of clayminerals for use in preconcentration and solid phase extraction (SPE) to increase the sensitivity and detectability of the analytical methodologies for determination of the organochlorine and organophosphorus compounds. This is necessary in order to reach the limits defined by Conselho Nacional de Meio Ambiente (CONAMA) in drinking waters, in which the concentrations of these compounds are usually very low. In order to improve our knowledge on the transport of organochlorine and organophosphorus compounds in soils, the developed methodologies will be used to perform adsorption studies constructing adsorption isotherms by the batch approach, following the recommendation of the Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements (IRMM) and of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)33. Langmuir ou Freundlich equations will be used for interpretation of adsorption data. The residues generated in these experiments will be degraded using the Fe0 process associated to the Photo-Fenton reaction. (AU)
