Abstract

Social exclusion is associated with the degree of access that individuals and groups are permitted to have to basic social systems, such as communities, institutions, the territories to which they belong, and economic resources. From this social participation, such people would construct symbolic references, which add to the subjective dimension of the concept of social exclusion. We might, therefore, think of social exclusion as a dynamic, multidimensional, relative and debilitating social process, involving a progressive loss of autonomy and of a sense of worth, with profound repercussions for the subject concerning his ability to take decisions about the course of his own life or about courses of events for which he is responsible. As a socially and historically determined institution, school is part of this process. Many children have had school-related difficulties and teachers have felt incapable of dealing with them, which have ended in psychological suffering for both individuals. From a psychoanalytically oriented background, the research proposed here is aimed at the investigation of the pertinence of the application of the concept of catastrophe for the understanding of some difficulties with learning. The data have been identified in a previous empirical investigation developed in a school situated in an area considered to be of high social exclusion. By the end of the post-doctoral study a paper in which the empirical and theoretical discussion will be presented will have been written. (AU)
