Abstract

An ocean numerical model was forced with NCEP/Reanalysis data to investigate the impacts on the South Atlantic of changes in the atmospheric forcing during the past 60 years. The preliminary analysis seems to confirm results of recently published papers which suggest an increase in the inter-ocean exchange between the Indian Ocean and South Atlantic (the Agulhas Leakage), in response to a southward displacement of the wind stress curl. Here we are requesting support from FAPESP to a three-months visit to the United States, during which an intensive analysis of the numerical experiment will be conducted in cooperation’s with colleagues at the NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) and the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science of the University of Miami. In this period, in addition to at least two articles submitted to publication, we intend to start new experiments, including the implementation and use of a coupled ocean-atmosphere model. (AU)
