This thesis analyzes how some Brazilian theater groups staged two of Anton Chekhov's most important plays - The Seagull (1896) and The Three Sisters (1900). In order to do so, within the context of modern and contemporary Brazilian theater, three plays were selected: As Três Irmãs (1972, Teatro Oficina), directed by Zé Celso, Da Gaivota (1998) directed by Daniela Thomas, and Gaivota ¿ tema para um conto curto (2006) directed by Enrique Diaz. Understanding the actor as a central structuring element of the scene, the research was mainly supported by interviews and testimonies of actors and actresses who composed these plays, as well as other materials used in the creation processes and about the play, such as: textual adaptation, DVD and reviews published in newspapers and magazines. The historical closeness between Anton Tchekhov and Konstantin Stanislavski - the first to stage the pieces with mastery - made this director a fundamental reference in this process of transposition to the scene and, therefore, it was also sought to detect traces of this relationship in those works. Finally, the resulting analysis deals with the confrontation of these Brazilian artists with this dramatic work, trying to understand the meanders, the general aspects and the more subtle details of how this dramatic material was transposed to the scene.
