Abstract

The cities from today are being continuously changed by neoliberal models led, mostly, by capital and private interests. In such context, even the government, who should ensure the public interests, creates policies influenced by these drivers which contributes to the commodification of the urban space. The appropriations of parklets in São Paulo in its first seven years of existence are representative of these processes: increasingly used for consumption, the transformation of these spatialities point to an instrumentalization of public spaces that aims to explore their productive and economic dimensions and to insert it in the dynamics of capital reproduction in urban space. The approach of this policy to commercial occupation policies of public spaces in the cities of Lyon and Seville, however, shows that these transformations are not specific to São Paulo, but result from the existence of a physical and social landscape homogenization process of different cities around the world. Thus, the research showed how public and private agents and interests were organized in the construction of the parklets and terrasses policies, and the consequences of the insertion of these elements in the urban landscape and sociability.
