This doctoral thesis analyzes the first five editions of the Pan-American Congresses of Architects (Montevideo, 1920; Santiago do Chile, 1923; Buenos Aires, 1927; Rio de Janeiro, 1930; Montevideo, 1940) in order to understand the effects of articulations operated between the professional and political debates put into dispute in these events. The different defenses and controversies about academic training, the spheres of representation and professional association, the elaboration of urban plans, the housing problem and the symbolic dimension of architectural production are analyzed in their mutual implication with geopolitics accentuated by interwar relations in America. Through the analysis of the minutes and works produced in each edition, of the magazines edited by the national professional associations and of texts published by the Pan-American Union, in close dialogue with historiographical approaches, the structuring of the professional field organized from the Pan-Americanism in its multiple mobilizations is problematized. It is argued that the correspondences between the projects for the future of American cities and the profession of architect established based on these political practices that, through interpretations of the history of America, legitimize the exercise of the profession in the American continent (AU) | |
