Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP). Campus São Paulo. Escola Paulista de Medicina (EPM)  (Institutional affiliation from the last research proposal)
Birthplace: Brazil

Zoilo Pires de Camargo holds a degree in Biological Sciences - Medical Modality from the São Paulo State University (1971), a Master's degree in Microbiology and Immunology from the Federal University of São Paulo (1975), a Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from the Federal University of São Paulo (1978), and a Postdoctoral degree from the Pasteur Institute in Paris (1981-1983). He obtained the title of Associate Professor (Livre-Docente) from the University of São Paulo (USP) in 2002. Currently, he is a Full Professor in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Parasitology at UNIFESP, working in the Cellular Biology Division. He served as Head of the Division from 2006 to 2009. He is currently a CNPq Productivity Fellow, Level 1B. He was a member of the CNPq Advisory Committee on Microbiology and Parasitology and serves as an ad-hoc consultant for CNPq, FAPESP, CAPES, Fundação Araucária, and FAPERGS. From 2003 to 2006, he was Vice President of the "International Society for Human and Animal Mycology - ISHAM." He has experience in medical mycology, focusing mainly on the immunodiagnosis of systemic and opportunistic mycoses using serological, immunoenzymatic, and molecular biology techniques. He is also interested in the epidemiology of mycoses and, in this regard, has established a network of collaborators across Brazil, in the states of Paraná, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Ceará, Pará, Rio de Janeiro, and Minas Gerais. He introduced to Brazil and Latin America the methodology for preparing P. brasiliensis exoantigen (reference antigen) for the diagnosis of paracoccidioidomycosis. He was the first to standardize the technique for detecting circulating antigens in paracoccidioidomycosis. The most studied fungi in his research are mainly Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, Candida spp., Sporothrix schenckii, Coccidioides posadasii, and Trichosporon spp. His work combines classical eco-epidemiological approaches with molecular biology. Since 2010, he has focused on the Molecular Biology of pathogenic fungi, aiming to study the molecular epidemiology of the Sporothrix schenckii complex in Brazil, as well as aspects of fungal proteomics and immunoproteomics (immunome) of Sporothrix and Paracoccidioides species. Since 2017, his research has focused on studying the antigens of Paracoccidioides lutzii. (Source: Lattes Curriculum)
