He holds a bachelor's degree in Social Sciences (1973) and Economics (1972) from the University of São Paulo. He has a master's degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the Graduate School of Design - Harvard University (1976) and a PhD in Sociology from the University of São Paulo (1986). He is a lecturer in Education at USP. He was a professor at the Faculty of Education at USP (1988-2018). He is a Senior Full Professor in the Graduate Program in Environmental Science (PROCAM/IEE/USP) at the University of São Paulo. Member of the Scientific Division of Management, Science, and Environmental Technology at the Institute of Energy and Environment/USP. President of the Graduate Studies Committee and Coordinator of PROCAM/USP (1998-2000 and 2010-2012). Coordinator of the Environmental Governance Monitoring and Studies Group - GovAmb/IEE. Principal Investigator at CLIMARES - Center for Research on Resilience to Climate Crises and Disasters - coordination of the Social Transformations in the Face of Climate Change axis. Coordinator of the Environment and Society Studies group at the Institute of Advanced Studies at USP. Editor-in-Chief of the magazine Ambiente e Sociedade (ANPPAS) since 1997. Collaborating Researcher at IEA/USP with the USP Global Cities Program. President of the ICLEI-South America Council since 2011. Member of the Board of Directors of Anppas 2023-2027 as Director of Publications. Member of the International Board of the SARAS Institute (South American Institute for Resilience and Sustainability Studies/Uruguay) since 2019.
