Abstract

The power system dynamic response is impacted by uncertainties in the system operation such as load variation and large penetration of intermittent generation. This paper presents a method based on the solution of the nonlinear Riccati equation for the design of coordinated robust damping controllers for power systems. The resulting robust controller is of practical application (fixed-order) with a performance guarantee based on quadratic stability. The method is applied to the 68-bus 5-area benchmark test system and the designed controllers are assessed by modal analysis and nonlinear time simulation. The obtained results show better performance of the proposed method compared to benchmark controllers. (AU)
