Development of new nanomaterials for nanomedicine applications

Abstract

Nanomedicine is expected to provide solutions to some of modern medicine's unsolved problems and offers new hopes in several critical areas such as cancer treatment, viral and bacterial infections, medical imaging, biosensors, tissue regeneration, and theranostics. The goal of the current project is the development of new biocompatible multifunctional nanomaterials based on acetalated-dextran nanoparticles, well-defined multifunctional dendrimers, gold dendronized nanoparticles, and injectable hydrogels, for application in nanomedicine. The project will focus on the synthesis of the new materials using innovative synthetic strategies based on orthogonality and click chemistry. Within this project we are proposing the design of biomaterials with potential activity in the treatment of cancer, bacterial infections and diseases caused by inflammation. The cytotoxicity of all the new nanomaterials will be tested against several cell lines in order to define if these materials are valid candidates for drug delivery platforms. (AU)
