Proposing a Gini type indicator for assessment of school performance.

Abstract

Analyzing the Brazilian school performance is a topic that has received special attention in the literature over the last two decades, especially regarding its advances, challenges, educational management and reflections with specific pedagogical interpretations. Much of this research concentrates its attention on aspects such as the influence of educational indicators on teacher training, school curriculum and the discussion of educational policies, and few authors have investigated other indicators for this purpose. In this sense, the central objective of this research is to propose another indicator, a Gini type one, for the assessment of school performance, which uses, as a variable, only the grades obtained in an assessment of some sort, for instance, an exam. The Gini index is a statistical value that measures how equitable is the distribution of a resource in a population and in this context the indicator will allow to observe the uniformity in the distribution of the grades of an evaluation as well as the evolution of these. With this research we want to evaluate whether this indicator is fruitful for the discussions in the scenario of the basic education in the country and for this, we will make an application of the proposed indicator using the data base for the annual performance obtained in Mathematics by the 3a series of high school students of each public school participating in the School Performance Evaluation System of the State of São Paulo (Saresp) in the period from 2008 to 2017.
