Applications of NMR and infrared spectroscopies in the non-destructive analysis of products and agroindustrial processes

Abstract

Agriculture is one of the human activities that allowed the evolution of the human being as a society, as it is the main source of food, Feed, fiber and fuel (4F). Faced with the continuous increase in the human population, changes in climate patterns and rapidly dispersion of pests and diseases, agricultural research must not only increase productivity, but also generate higher quality products, with longer shelf life, and at the same time generate technologies so that production systems are increasingly less polluting. Thus, research in the agricultural area increasingly involves studies and knowledge of chemistry, physics and biology, not only as isolated disciplines, but also with all their complex interrelationships with traditional agricultural research such as agronomy, veterinary, among many others. Therefore, most of the current research in the agricultural area is multidisciplinary and multi-institutional, carried out in partnerships between researchers in the agricultural areas with researchers in the basic sciences and engineering. It is within this multidisciplinary scope and with multiple inter-institutional partnerships, with a focus on "green" technologies, that the objective of this research project is: Develop instrumentation and methods of low and high field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and spectroscopy in the infrared, near and mid-infrared region, for non-destructive or non-invasive analysis, analyzes without or with minimal generation of toxic residues. These instruments and methods will be used to analyze both products originating in the field (4F) and products that are used in the field such as pesticides, fertilizers, etc. and in agro-industrial processes. In addition, this project also aims, when possible, to transform this knowledge into green technologies that can be used to benefit not only rural producers, agro-industries, but also the final consumer.
