Immune-epidemiology of infectious diseases: quantitative approaches considering clinical, therapeutic and prophylactic aspects

Abstract

The quantitative epidemiology based on the immunology describes biological phenomena that situate between two largely separated scales (on microscopic scale we have the molecular and cellular interactions and on the macrocosms we have the interaction among populations). However both descriptions can be dealt with quite same mathematical tools, although the epidemiology of infectious diseases has to be greatly improved by the advances in the immunology. Gradual and continuous developments in the mathematical epidemiology arise new approaches in the public health with respect to the controlling efforts, which is certainly the status quo in Brazil. The main goal of the epidemiology based on the immunology, which presents multidisciplinary character, is the analysis related to the eradication or control (at lower incidence) conditions of the disease. Aiming to the reasonable and efficient applications of the available controlling mechanisms and to minimize the undesirable effects of any chemotherapy (at the levels of human individuaIs and vectors), we develop mathematical models in order to produce scenarios related to the dynamical behaviors encompassing the available controlling mechanisms. For this reason mathematical models must be well founded on rational and biological aspects of the phenomena under analysis to offer quantitative choosing tool with respect to the different forms of prophylactic and therapeutic applications. In the project we aIso analyze other branches of physiology, such that the mathematical modelling in neuroscience, transport phenomena in biology and pharmacal-dynamics. This project deaIs with quantitative methods applied to Epidemiology and Physiology. In order to attain the goal, Institutes of the São Paulo State, other States of Brazil and Latin American countries take place. One of the expected consequences is the creation of Bio-mathematics Centre to be a reference to the researchers from different branches of Science. This objective is in accordance with the worldwide tendencyin the creation of multi-disciplinary Centres to promote mathematical viewpoint to the biological phenomena. (AU)
