Abstract

The Xavante population is estimated in 10,000 individuals, living in six federal reservations (Indian land) in the state of Mato Grosso: Pimentel Barbosa, Areões, Parabubure, Marechal Rondon, Sangradouro e São Marcos. A survey carried out by our group, with support from the National Research Council (CNPq), in the Xavante Reserve of Sangradouro, showed a prevalence of diabetes of 22%; it should be highlighted the rate of 50% among women aged 40 years or more. Around half of the Indians with diabetes needed to use insulin to control the hyperglycemia; several of them already presented with diabetes chronic complications as retinopathy, nephropathy and lower limb amputations. In the São Marcos Xavante Reserve, 120 km far from the Sangradouro Reserve, with an Indian population of 3,200 individuals, the situations is apparently worse, according to reports from physicians that visited the area.The Xavante population from São Marcos, knowing our work in Sangradouro,are interested to have the same evaluation in their community in relation to diabetes, which is expressed in a document signed by leaders of the community. They are very aprehensive in relation to diabetes and its complicatins.What we are proposing is to carry out a survey among Xavante from São Marcos: to evaluate the health conditions of the adult population, to estimate the prevalence of diabetes, hypertension and dyslipidemias, to identify individuals with high risk to develop diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, to create a data bank of clinical and laboratory indicators for a longitudinal study to know the incidence o diabetes and its chronic complications, hypertension and cardiovascular events, and to contribute ro the natural history of this group of diseases. the field work will be carried out through periodic visits of the research team, that will perform clinical examinations and collection of material for laboratory exams in São Paulo at the UNIFESP, and in Ribeirão Preto at the FMRP-USP.
