Abstract

Juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus (JSLE) is a chronic, autoimmune, multi-systemic disease that affects individuals up to the age of 18. Adult patients with SLE have high rates of morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular disease. In addition, they have some risk factors for developing chronic diseases that can compromise future survival of these individuals, such as high frequency of dyslipidemia, inadequate food consumption, increase of fat mass and lean mass reduction. Objectives: to evaluate the body composition, biochemical markers related to lipid metabolism and enzymes related to cardiovascular risk in adolescents with JSLE; and evaluate the impact of a nutritional intervention protocol in reducing cardiovascular risk, changing in body composition and quality of life of adolescents with JSLE. Methods: All JSLE patients will be evaluated (n = 40), in controlled cross sectional and a randomized interventional studies aged between 10 and 19 years and at least 6 months of disease. At time 0, 15ml of blood will be collected for analysis of biochemical markers related to lipid metabolism and inflammation, and it will also be performed bone densitometry and questionnaires. Laboratory tests will be repeated in a healthy control group, matched for age and pubertal stage. The JSLE patients will be randomized to a diet intervention group or a control group. After four to six months lipid profile and C-reactive protein will be determined and all examinations from the baseline will be performed again 9 to 12 months of intervention. (AU)
