Abstract

The interactions between fungi and bacteria are present in the nature and has great environmental and medical importance. The development of in vitro and in vivo models to characterize these interactions is essential for the understanding of the pathogenesis of the disease and the discovery of new therapeutic strategies. The aim of this study is to assess the microbial interactions between Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus acidophilus with Candida albicans biofilms models formed in vitro and in experimental models of invertebrates. In vitro study, will be assessed the effects of S. mutans and L. acidophilus on biofilm formation by C. albicans and on the ability of filamentation zone of C. albicans. In both tests, will be assessed the direct effects of the cells of bacteria on C. albicans and also the indirect effects of microorganisms on C. albicans, using only the supernatant of its cultures. For the study in vivo, the strains of S. mutans or L. acidophilus with C. albicans will be inoculated in caterpillars of Galleria mellonella for induction of experimental infection. The effects of bacteria on candidosis experimental will be evaluated by survival curve of G. mellonella, studies of tissue culture for UFC/mL quantification of C. albicans and histological evaluation of C. albicans filamentation in the host tissues. The results of the tests in vitro and in the CFU/mL count of G. mellonella will be submitted to ANOVA and Tukey's test. The data obtained in the survival curve of G. mellonella will be analyzed by method of Log-rank. In all tests, will be considered a significance level of 5%. (AU)
