Abstract

A significant improvement in quality of life of mankind in recent times has been achieved through the development of new materials in various areas of science. The unimaginable technological advances of recent decades has allowed engineering to improve the preparation and characterization of new nanostructured and massive materials, with the concomitant production of new electronic, magnetic, for alternative energy production and other types of products and devices. It is therefore of great interest that research groups in different areas of materials science and engineering integrate significantly so that progress made individually can be used by other groups for the purpose of developing new materials and / or properties, and then transformed into new technologies. The newly created Federal University of ABC (UFABC) has as one of its objectives this integration between different areas of research and, within a multidisciplinary approach, has adopted the policy that its medium to large research equipment has multi-user character, remaining available to all interested groups. In this context, several research groups make up this thematic project aiming to develop and study new massive and nanostructured materials. The team will focus on the development of basic, fundamental and applied research of these materials, permeating through different areas on the frontier of science. In addition, this group will be supported by an experienced theoretical team to contribute with the understanding and interpretation of experimental results, as well as modeling of new materials preparation methods under development, or to be developed, by the participating experimental groups. Efforts are concentrated in manufacturing and understanding of materials obtained based on the know-how of each of the groups involved, as well as integration and sharing of knowledge to achieve these goals. As examples, we can highlight the production of massive poly-and monocrystalline materials with potential for applications in thermoelectric devices, thin films of metal oxides used as electrodes in photovoltaic devices, insulating and metallic nanoparticle systems with paramagnetic and magnetic characteristics. Besides, undergraduate students, graduate students and post doctorate investigators in the interdisciplinary area of novel materials will be directly involved in this project. Finally, the Project is being presented to FAPESP at this time as a consequence of the successful provision and operationalization, over 2011, of practically all laboratory space and multi-user facilities contemplated by UFABC since its inception. For the execution of this Project the Institution offers as counterpart a comprehensive range of infrastructure with multi-user character, which includes medium to large basic equipment for X-ray, EPR, PPMS, VSM, Raman and IR experiments, among others. Each group also has adequate research laboratory space, including basic infrastructure for development of their materials to be studied during the execution of this thematic project. (AU)
