Abstract
The aims of this project are to assess levels of gossypol and energy (oil) from the cotton seed (CA) in feedlot finishing Nelore diets. Three experiments will be conducted. In experiment I (Performance) will be evaluated five levels of CA (0, 8, 16, 24 and 32%) corresponding to treatments CA0; CA8, CA16, CA24 and CA32 in dry matter (DM) of diets (isonitrogenous) containing 90% concentrate, and a control diet (NC) containing the same amount of energy (oil) of diet CA32, however from soybean oil. A total of 216 Nelore bulls will be used for performance assessment (DM intake, daily gain and feed efficiency) quantitative data carcass (hot carcass weight, cold carcass weight, dressing percentage, loin eye area, fat thickness and pH) and meat quality (gossypol content, fatty acid profile, flavor (sensory analysis), the chemical composition of volatile compounds (odor - GC / MS-Headspace), color, shelf-life, and cholesterol) and blood parameters (gossypol, triglycerides and cholesterol). In experiment II (Metabolism) will be used six Nellore steers, cannulated in the rumen in a 6x6 Latin square design. Will be evaluated the same treatments described for the first experiment on dry matter intake, digestibility of nutrients, omasal flow of nutrients, ruminal parameters (pH, production of short chain fatty acids and ammonia nitrogen), the microbial protein synthesis, blood parameters (gossypol and plasma urea) excretion and nitrogen balance, and eating behavior. In experiment III (in vitro gas production kinetic) will be evaluated the 6 diets as cumulative gas production, asymptotic gas production; fractional rate of gas production from the slowly fermentable feed fraction, and the lag time before fermentation begins and ruminal degradation kinetics of DM and FDN (AU)
