Abstract

Researchers from different countries have shown a beneficial effect of the presence of HGV RNA on the long-term survival of HIV-infected patients. The mechanisms for this effect are, as yet, unclear. It has been shown that there are several gender-associated features of HIV/Aids. However, the majority of the studies of the HGV/HIV interaction were performed on casuistic composed mostly by male patients. The HIV epidemic in Brazil is displaying a shift to susceptible populations, noticeably women and teenagers. The proportion of male to female cases has reached 1:1 in 2004, urging to conduct studies focusing on these populations. Objectives: Perform a retrospective study on the influence of HGV infection on the survival, morbidity, and other HIV clinic-laboratorial parameters in a cohort of HIV-infected women. Matherial and methods: Plasma from 200 HIV-infected women is kept frozen at a repository. These women were part of a cohort participating in a study performed in 1997-1999 on human papillomavirus infection and gynecological abnormalities, as described elsewhere (ref. LEVI et al. 2004). Patients will be contacted and invited to provide a new blood sample, which will be used for HGV-RNA and anti-E2 HGV determination. The same analysis will be performed on the previous sample for those patients agreeing to participate. Other relevant data will be collected during an interview by an infectologist (opportunistic infections, antiretroviral use, etc.).
