Abstract

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and sleep duration disturbances are very common medical conditions which affect not only the quality of life but also increases cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The mechanisms by which these sleep disorders promote cardiovascular disease are still poorly explored, but it is conceivable that metabolic disregulation and the occurrence of atherosclerosis are involved. The present project aims to a comprehensive approach to the impact of OSA on metabolic parameters and markers of atherosclerosis in different populations: 1) people from the Community; 2) patients without established coronary heart disease, but with increased risk for cardiovascular disease - Metabolic Syndrome model; and 3) patients with established coronary heart disease. We will perform several epidemiological and interventional approaches to explore the potential role of OSA in the modulation of metabolic disregulation and progression of atherosclerosis. Moreover, we are going to evaluate in two of the studies whether duration of sleep can also contribute to the metabolic disregulation and atherosclerosis. The accomplishment of this project will not only provide support for a researcher not fully established but also the consolidation of a new core of sleep and extension of an important research area in an Institution with established tradition of research. At the same time, it is expected that the development of projects will result in multidisciplinary and international collaboration, support undergraduate and PhD students as well as generate innovative data with direct clinical implications.
