Evapotranspiration and crop coefficient of physic nut from the third year of cultivation associated whit different prune

Abstract

The searching fossil fuels alternatives is considered a reality, making it essential to increase research in agricultural crops for biofuel production. In this context, the culture of jatropha (Jatropha curcas L.) has been outstanding, leading several research institutions to study this little known native plant, as with regard to its development as to its production. An important parameter of the culture is the water consumption during the cycle and the influence of water deficit on growth, flowering and fruit development. However, the water consumption of the crop is still unknown, requiring further studies regarding to the amount of water consumed by the plant during entire production cycle and different management conditions, e.g., when subjected to pruning. The use of pruning at this culture has been placed as a required practical to facilitate the management and with great potential to improve production, increasing the quantity and also the possibility to concentrate the production through the time. In this context, the present study will aim to determine evapotranspiration and single and dual crop coefficients of jatropha from the second year of cultivation associated with different types of pruning. The study will be conducted on plants already established in the experimental area of the Department of Biosystems Engineering ESALQ/USP in Piracicaba-SP, which will be implemented two types of pruning. It will be used the technique of weighing lysimeters for the determination of evapotranspiration, the technique of thermal dissipation to determine the plant transpiration and, by difference, evaporation. It will be assessed the effect of pruning on transpiration of plants, on production and distribution, besides the quantity and quality of oil produced by plants of jatropha. (AU)
