Abstract

Speech sound disorders (SSD) are the speech and language disorder that affects more than 6% of children during the first infancy compromising speech intelligibility in different degrees. Because of the heterogeneity of manifestations of SSD a diagnostic improvement is required in order to provide additional evidence for the disorder. The phonological process of devoicing (for both plosives and fricatives) characterized by a devoiced production for a voiced sound is one of the most occurring process observed in Brazilian Portuguese-speaking children-speaking children. Despite advances in techniques and available equipment for the analysis of speech there is still discussion about the control mechanism for the vibration of the vocal cords. Literature suggests the coexistence of two different modes of control of voicing that operate at different rates of speed of speech. Thus the functional assessment and the detailed description of the articulatory, acoustic and airflow characteristics of voiced sounds in children with typical speech development will bring important evidence for understanding what happens with the production of children with SSD and devoicing. The great innovation of this study is the inclusion of the airflow measure as well as the implementation of acoustic and eletroglotographic parameters. The aim of the project is to describe the properties of voiced fricatives by using aerodynamic, acoustic and eletroglotographic measures in Brazilian Portuguese-speaking children with SSD and typically developing speakers aged from 5:0 to 7:11 years-old.
