Expression of hormonal factors and extracellular matrix proteins in recurrent pleomorphic adenoma

Abstract

Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common neoplasm of the salivary gland and, despite being classified as benign, it is capable of recurrence (RPA). RPA presents a challenge for surgeons in terms of treatment, due to the high probability of further recurrence and an increased risk of malignant transformation. Unfortunately, few studies on RPA are available in the literature. Extracellular matrix proteins have been extensively associated with tumor biology. Hormonal factors have also been used as adjuvant therapies and prognostic markers in various neoplasms. The aim of this study is to investigate the role of fibronectin, tenascin, estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR) and human epidermal growth receptor-2 (HER-2) in PA, RPA and RPA with malignant transformation (TRPA). The expression of these proteins will be evaluated using immunohistochemistry in 20 cases of PA, 20 cases of RPA and 03 cases of TRPA. HER2 gene expression will be quantified using in situ hybridization. (AU)
