Abstract

The development of goods containing nanomaterials has been rising in the last years. On the other hand, the ecotoxicological implications, assimilation and reactivity of nanomaterials within living beings are not well understood. Furthermore such research subjects are still incipient worldwide. In this context the present proposal aims at creating a research group and acquire de necessary infrastructure needed to study the absorption, transport, accumulation and chemical transformations of nanomaterials (ZnO, ZrO2 and CuO) incorporated by plants (Phaseolus vulgaris, i.e., Brazilian bean). The absorbed nanomaterials and metallic micro nutrients will be quantified and the parameters that influence the uptake of nanomaterials such as effect of particle size, concentration and time of exposure will be evaluated in root and foliar systems. Plant organs will be scanned by micro X-ray fluorescence locating the specialised tissues of storage. The distribution of organic metabolites around the accumulation spots will be mapped by Raman scattering spectroscopy. The combination of these two techniques will result in chemical images which will contribute to the understanding of the metabolism in the surroundings of the accumulation spots. In addition, plant detoxification mechanisms will be revealed through the investigation of the chemical environment of the incorporated nanomaterials by X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Finally, the kinetics of transport and storage will be explored by in vivo micro X-ray fluorescence. (AU)
