Abstract

AbstractThis research proposal has the main goal of monitoring the modern geochemical and stable isotope dynamics of oxygen and carbon of vadose percolation in karst systems where well dated stalagmites has been obtained, in order to increase the confidence of paleoclimatic interpretations of speleothem records deposited in tropical to subtropical environments. Parameters as pluviosity, oxygen and carbon isotopic composition of recharge and vadose percolation waters, as well as, the main dissolved ions and trace elements will be monitored along two years, what implies in systematic sampling in several karst systems. This project represents the continuity of the previous research projects developed with financial suport of FAPESP (FAPESP proc. 2010/20339-4 e 2012/01187-4). The monitoring sites has been selected based on caves where stalagmites precisely dated by U/Th geochronology where already available and will produce high resolution paleoclimatic records, based on the calibration which will be guided with the monitoring results. The study sites are located along the South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ) which is the main climatic component of the South American Monsoon System. The present proposal will also support the paleoclimatic interpretations of stalagmites collected and studied in the domain of Southeastern Bahia state, by the biogeography and biodiversity projects of FAPESP (grants apesp: 2013/50297-0; 2012/03942-4; 2011/1203-4). The here proposed monitoring of karst systems will give conditions to precisely quantify the isotopic effects which occur in the atmosphere above tropical continental areas, and how these effects influence the hidrogeochemistry and isotopic composition of infiltration waters of the karst system due to seasonal recharge variations. This proposal is integrated with several other research projects in course supported by FAPESP (grants FAPESP 2013/50297-0; 2012/03942-4; 2011/1203-4, 2015/14327-7, FAPESP 2012/03942-4), as well as doctoral thesis research of Lucas Padoan de Sá Godinho, Verônica Ramirez Ruiz e Plácido Frabrício Tresmondi Melo Buarque, with CAPES scholarships. Al these research proposals are focused in getting reconstitution of the decadal to multisecular variability of the precipitation during the last glacial period in tropical to subtropical areas.
