Effect of jucara (Euterpe edulis Mart) polp administration on intestinal permeability in mice treated with hyperlipidic and hypercaloric diet

Abstract

The ingestion of hyperlipidic and hypercaloric diet is considered as major factor in the obesity genesis, which led to an increase in the ROS production, that is related to many metabolic alterations associated to the obesity. The increase in intestinal permeability may be due to the excessive intake of a hypercaloric diet, which may lead to an increase in LPS translocation into the bloodstream, contributing to systemic inflammation. On the other hand, the ingestion of food with antioxidant properties could be a tool to prevent the deleterious effect of the high white adipose deposition. Acai puree (Euterpe oleracea Mart), native from Amazon Rain Forest, is a food consumed highly in Brazil and many countries and shows antioxidant properties. Likely acai, jucara (Euterpe edulis Mart) is native from Mata Atlantica Rain Forest, also shows antioxidante activity, but the studies are scarce. The aim of this study is the effect of jucara puree in mice treated with hyperlipidic and hypercaloric diet on intestinal permeability. (AU)
