Abstract

In this work we analyze the complexation capacity of humic substances extracted from the Black River to the species Cr +3 and Cr +6, and evaluate the use of kinetic consumption of hydrogen peroxide as an indicator of lability and / or recalcitrance of natural organic matter present in a water resource. For this, will be collected monthly water samples over a period of 12 months, completing a hydrological cycle in Dam Municipal de São José do Rio Preto to study the kinetics of consumption of hydrogen peroxide. For studies of complexing chromium ions with humic substances (AHS) will be collected surface water samples (in sufficient volume to obtain sufficient amount of SHA, approximately 400 L) of the Black River into two distinct periods: one during smaller rainfall (May-August) and the other in the period of highest rainfall (December to March). Then the SHA will be extracted using the method proposed by the International Society of Humic Substances (IHSS). The SHA be fractionated into different sizes (10, 30, 50 and 100 kDa) according to the method proposed by Burba et al (2001). The quantification of total chromium will be employing an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer with Graphite Furnace atomization with Zeeman GFAAS broker. The quantification of hexavalent chromium will be done using the method of diphenylcarbazide by spectrophotometry UV / Vis. The evaluation of complexing with ions of SHA Cr +3 and Cr +6 will be made employing the system Tangential Flow Ultrafiltration with the free metal and quantification is performed after each metal addition and at intervals after pre-determined studies complexation time. The results generated in this work will be relevant to generate unprecedented results in the region that will assess the dynamics of chromium ions in the region. It also aims to contribute to the proposed indicator of labile organic matter, which can be used as a tool for studies evaluating the role of organic matter in aquatic environments in all regions of the world.
