Abstract

In this work we propose the development of composite electrodes based on graphite and polyurethane and/or carbon paste electrodes, modified with artificial enzymes, in this case, metal complexes of Schiff bases in order to obtain biomimetic sensors or artificial enzyme biosensors without enzymes (enzymeless biosensors).Thus, we intend to combine the advantages of solid composite electrodes as high sensitivity, mechanical strength, stability in flow applications, ease of surface renewal and the possibility of immobilizing redox substances that exhibit catalytic activity for important molecules, mimicking the function of enzymes. Schiff bases have shown catalytic activity similar to metallo-porphyrins and horseradish peroxidase, which can then be used as modifiers in the preparation of biomimetic sensors for determination of phenols, diphenols and peroxides. Our research group has been working successfully in the use of composites based on graphite-polyurethane in the determination of various substances and the candidate has experience in this type of work. This project should contribute to the development of methods for determination of biologically active substances or drugs, using modified composite electrodes. The modification of the composite electrodes should give them a better selectivity and sensitivity.
