Abstract

According to World Health Organization, neoplasias represent the second leading cause of worldwide death. We live in an aerobic environment so all organisms stay continuously and inevitably exposed to reactive oxygen species and/or nitrogen. These species react with DNA, intracellular proteins and lipid from membranes causing damage in these structures; therefore, these damages should be related to the genesis of many chronic diseases, such as cancer. Besides being source of new drugs, plants can also be used in preventing various diseases through different mechanisms of action, such as immunomodulation and antioxidant capacity. Thus, natural products with antioxidant capacity are promising cancer chemopreventive as they can inhibit the occurrence of pre-cancerous lesions in DNA. "Carqueja", Baccharis trimera (Less.) DC. (Asteraceae) is a native species from tropical regions widely used in folk medicine as anti-inflammatory, to treat liver and kidney problems as well as stomach and intestinal disorders. Recent studies have demonstrated the potential of B. trimera essential oil (EO) as schistosomicidal on adult worms of Schistosoma mansoni (BH strain). Since B. trimera presents potential medicinal uses, this project aims to evaluate the antioxidant activity of EO and its fractions on DPPH and Folin-Ciocalteu tests, antimutagenic/mutagenic potential in vitro through the model of micronucleus induction and phytochemical study of the EO in order to correlate chemical composition with the activities. Thus, this study will contribute to the knowledge about pharmacological activity and safety for medicinal use of B. trimera.
