Abstract

Natural rubber latex (NRL, cis-1,4-polyisoprene) extracted from Hevea brasiliensis has been shown to stimulate angiogenesis, cellular adhesion, and the formation of extracellular matrix, promoting the replacement and regeneration of tissue. Moreover, the natural rubber latex was used as an occlusive membrane for guided bone regeneration. In the present study, a novel sustained delivery system for ciprofloxacin based on Natural Rubber Latex (NRL) films was developed. Ciprofloxacin is a synthetic chemotherapeutic antibiotic of the fluoroquinolone drug class. It is used to treat different types of bacterial infections. We will study the ciprofloxacin delivery system behavior by preparing films at different polymerization temperatures, in order to control the film morphology. Ciprofloxacin release as a function of time will be determined using the UV-VIS method. The ciprofloxacin containing NRL films will be characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS).(AU)
