Abstract

The Brazilian publishing industry is dominated in the nineteenth-century by the figure of the bookseller-publisher, a professional who edited and sold books in accordance, mainly, with market trends. As a strategy for selling his collections, the booksellers announced their titles in advertisements for periodicals, catalogs and catalogs inside books. This research, which is part of the project "The transatlantic circulation of printed: the globalization of culture in the nineteenth century," will utilize as source catalogs present inside books published in Rio de Janeiro, from 1840 to 1865, in order to check the domestic and foreign novels announced, the actuality of these works, the variation in the number of novels for sale and the time it took foreign books to arrive in Brazil, enabling the preparation of a map of the merits of the novels on sale nationwide.
