Abstract The pneumatic reactors have been widely employed in various sectors of the chemical industry, especially where it is required high rates of heat transfer and mass, rapid mixing and appropriate shear rates, such as the cultivation of sensitive cells (fungi and bacteria), so as to produce bioactive compounds by these microorganisms. Thus, in order to evaluate the efficiency or predict the scaling of these reactors, it is of utmost importance the detailed study of the hydrodynamics, mass transfer and shear of this equipment, since these parameters describe its behavior at different operating conditions and working fluids. However, the few studies that analyze how much parameters and especially the few reports of study for this type shear reactor for different operating conditions have led to the preparation of this work, initially aimed at the evaluation of hydrodynamic conditions, shear and mass transfer in bioreactors bubble column, airlift draft tube and airlift split cylinder, ranges from differents scales (5 and 10 L), against different Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids. Subsequently, in a secondary stage of this projetct, it is proposed to carry out cultivation for a given microorganism test aimed to produce a biocompound from this, using the reactors studied in order to evaluate their behavior and efficiency in relation to the chosen bioprocess.
