Abstract

One of the most fascinating and useful results obtained by string theory is the discovery of the relation between some field theories (generalizations of the theories that describe, for example, the electromagnetic and nuclear forces) and theories of gravity. This relation is at the hearth of the so-called "AdS/CFT correspondence", one of the most revolutionary breakthroughs in theoretical physics in the last decades.According to this correspondence, deformations of the geometry on the gravity side (or "AdS" side) are mapped to states of the dual gauge theory (or "CFT" side). Quite recently, an explicit realization of this map has been found for the important sector of half-BPS chiral primary operators of the N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. All the geometries corresponding to these operators (called "bubbling geometries") have been classified. The aim of this thesis is to review some aspects of these recent developments and, if time permits, realize some original computations in this area.
