Abstract

Every technology triggers positive and/or negative impacts on the environment in which it is inserted and on the people who live in such environment - even if they do not use it directly. Interactive systems are worldwide available, being used through different devices, for different purposes, in quite different contexts, with unpredictable and far-reaching consequences. Different studies and initiatives intended to identify, discuss and inspire the research in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) for the coming years have been conducted and presented by the international research community. These studies have pointed out to a new moment in the HCI area that requires its theories, methods and practices to be rethought in order to consider, in an explicitly way, aspects that are difficult to be measured and identified, such as values, culture, emotional and affective aspects, etc. However, although recognized as important issues in the design of solutions for a society mediated by Information and Communication Technologies, these aspects have been traditionally left on the margin of approaches for technology development, and are usually not addressed in the Computer Science and Information Technology curricula. This research project is situated in the context of this new moment of the HCI area and aims to investigate the potential of Norms in the formalization of aspects related to values and culture in the design and appropriation of technology. To understand how these aspects can be effectively considered, represented and reflected in the design of computing solutions involve also the proposition of artifacts, methods and tools to support design activities as well as their experimentation in practical design contexts.
