Abstract

Technologies for genome sequencing jointly with statistical methodologies have increasingly contributed for the application of genomic tools in animal breeding. In Brazil, the development of synthetic breeds from crosses between the subspecies Bos taurus indicus (Zebu) and Bos taurus taurus (Taurine) have been successfully used to combine the fitness of zebu animals with high carcass yield and precocity of taurine animals is desired. The exchange of genetic material between two or more populations (breeds) will result in individuals with different admixture levels, in which fragmentation of ancestral genomes occurs and subsequent combination of such fragments in the individuals derived from this event. Moreover, information about the period when such events occurred and the respective contribution of each population in the formation of a crossbreed-population can be estimated accurately by using molecular tools. The objective of this research project is to estimate the contribution of the Nellore and Charolais breeds in the formation of the synthetic breed called "Canchim", through admixture analysis. Data on 285 individuals of the Canchim breed, 114 of the MA genetic group, 790 of the Nellore breed, and 15 of the Charolais breed, genotyped through high density single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) panel, will be analyzed by means of Bayesian, single regression, and multivariate methods.
