Study of factors that influence the energy balance of overweight and obese women in different countries

Abstract

The obesity epidemic, most public health crises in the world nowadays, has a negative impact on health as increasing rates of chronic diseases, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease, and impaired cognitive performance. Thus, this project, part of a multicenter pilot study, aims to identify and compare the factors that influence the energy balance of obese and overweight in different countries (Brazil, China, Finland, India and United States). Fifty women 50 women aged between 30 and 50 years, 25 overweight (body mass index - BMI of 25 to 29.9 kg / m²) and 25 obese (BMI 30-35 kg / m²) will be selected. The cross-sectional study will be conducted in 14 days, and on the first day participants will undergo assessments to determine resting energy expenditure (by indirect calorimetry), physical activity (using accelerometer), food intake (3-day food record from the first day, and food frequency questionnaires and food inventory) and health outcomes (lipid profile and blood glucose, and anthropometry: body weight, height and waist/hip circumferences), in addition to other questionnaires addressing behavioral, sociological, lifestyle and health outcomes, and evaluation of body image of participants through a software. Also, on the first day, 20 participants (10 overweight and 10 obese) who will test the doubly labeled water to measure total energy expenditure, will receive a dose of this water, and urine samples will be collected before and 3, 4 and 5 hours after ingestion. On the 7th day of the study a urine sample will be collected from 20 participants involved in the doubly labeled water method, and the weight will be evaluated in all participants. The accelerometer will be removed from 30 participants not involved in the doubly labeled water method on the 7th day of the study. On the 14th day, the last day, a urine sample will be again collected from 20 participants and the accelerometer will be removed; besides the body weight will be evaluated in all participants. The results of this study may help to better understand the factors involved in energy balance and which contribute to the increase in obesity and comorbidities in the world, enabling the development of more effective therapeutic strategies.
