Abstract

Society has been searching renewable energy sources that are less polluting and that release less amounts of CO2. These sources are more advantageous than the fossil fuels. In this context, the cellulosic residues as those from the paper and cellulose industries and sugarcane plants are being considered promising sources for the ethanol production because they are rich in cellulose and hemicellulose. There with, this work aims to hydrolyze cellulosic residues as the paper sludge, a solid residue resulting from the production of wood pulp and paper mill operations, and the sugar cane bagasse obtained from the sugar cane plants, using cellulolytic and xylanolytic enzymes. As a result from the action of these enzymes, fermentable sugars that will be used by the yeasts able to ferment pentoses, hexoses and mixed cultures will be released for the production of ethanol. This work is part of the thematic project promoted by FAPESP, coordinated by Dr. Eleni Gomes, and the thematic project promoted by FAPESP; the National Institute of Biotechnology for Ethanol coordinated by Dr. Marcos Silveira Buckeridge, in partnership with CNPq - public notice of the National Institutes of Science, Technology and Innovation.
